In December of 1860, South Carolina decided to secede from the Union. In the few months following, another 10 states in the south also agreed to secession. The question: what was the reason given by these states to separate from their northern brethren?

Interesting poll, it was a fairly complex issue, but it all boiled down to money and how they made it.  Not surprisingly, many Northerners supported slavery much in the same way people support Walmart today — cheap, or supposedly cheap, goods.

You make an excellent point about the Northern support of slavery. They liked the “benefits” of slavery. Today it’s no different: we like the “benefits” of $15 for pants. But oh how dirty our hands are.
