Make It, Bake It, Sew It or Grow It
Last year I heard about a great idea that one family did for Christmas. The theme is Make It, Bake It, Sew It or Grow It. Whatever you give your family, you either make it, bake it, sew it, or grow it. I love this idea because it is not only frugal, it takes a lot more thought than just picking up something out of the dollar bin at Target. Not that I have ever done that. Ahem.
Last year for Christmas our budget was really tight, so I made candy for everyone in the family. I took a clipping of a plant in my house that my sister had admired and I rooted it, potted it up and gave it to her as a gift. I sewed a fuzzy stuffed octopus for my son. I framed pictures we took of our boys for the grandparents. I hand sewed a pillow for my Secret Sister at church. Everyone really enjoyed their gifts and I didn’t have to leave any one out. It was a good feeling, as I love giving thoughtful gifts, but often don’t have to budget to go out and get “the perfect thing.”
There are so many free patterns available on the internet, free recipes, and great ideas. You should be able to find something for everyone in your family at a price that fits your budget. The added benefit is that it will be more meaningful because they will know that you thought about it and spent time to make it happen, just for them.
