Bring our troops home from Afghanistan?

March 10, 2010 @ EddieView Comments

Whether or not you support the war, I think everyone wants our troops to come back home, and come back safe.

On 4 March, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) forced congress to into a debate on whether or not to continue the war effort in Afghanistan. He introduced H. Con. Res. 248 which reads:

Directing the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Afghanistan.
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),

SECTION 1. REMOVAL OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES FROM AFGHANISTAN.

Pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution (50 U.S.C. 1544(c)), Congress directs the President to remove the United States Armed Forces from Afghanistan–

  • (1) by no later than the end of the period of 30 days beginning on the day on which this concurrent resolution is adopted; or
  • (2) if the President determines that it is not safe to remove the United States Armed Forces before the end of that period, by no later than December 31, 2010, or such earlier date as the President determines that the Armed Forces can safely be removed.

Like many others, I am entirely in support of this resolution, and I hope you would be as well. This is right. This is the right, just, loving, and—dare I say it—Christian thing to do.

I appreciate what Robert Naiman said in The Huffington Post:

So it’s a great thing that Rep. Kucinich and his 16 allies are forcing Congress to debate the issue, and it would be even better if more Members of Congress would be urged by their constituents to support Kucinich’s resolution. That would be a signal to the House leadership that continuation of the open-ended war and occupation is controversial in the House, and the House leadership should not try to ram through $33 billion more for the war on a fast-track without ample opportunity for debate and amendment.

Every day the Afghanistan war continues is another day on which the United States Government plays Russian Roulette with the lives of American soldiers and Afghan civilians.

Naiman is right. Kucinich is right. We should all cast in our voices in support.
