Christians killing Muslims in Nigeria, violence begetting violence

The summary by CNN’s John Blake for his story “Religious hatred simmers in terror suspect’s homeland” could not have been stated better:

Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab wouldn’t have to go to an al Qaeda camp in Yemen to learn how to hate. He had examples closer to home. Christians and Muslims have been killing each other in Nigeria for much of his lifetime.

As comes in later in the story, “violence begets violence.” But what John Blake stated was very true: when killing is the culture you grew up in, there is no need to learn it from elsewhere. When you factor in the history of Nigeria (brought up and summarized in the story), the general history of Christian and Muslim animosity, and then the retaliation and attitude of revenge taken by those Christians in Nigeria who chose to act in that way and be part of the violence, it would be difficult not to breed violence in the younger generations.

Christians and Muslims have been killing each other in Nigeria for much of AbdulMutallab’s lifetime. At least 10,000 Nigerians have died during Christian-Muslim riots and ethnic violence during the past decade.

That is a very telling statistic. That is not the message and mission of God’s Kingdom. That is not the Good News of Jesus. That is not serving and loving your neighbors and enemies. That is not the way of the cross.

I understand there is a lot of cultural turmoil behind the violence. As was also brought out in the story, poverty is a big factor. Poverty and oppression was a major influence in the time of Jesus as well, especially to the zealots who wanted the violent uprising and takeover of their home from Rome and the elites. Still Jesus came in, supplied the method and means to revolution, and not one bit of it was violent. Despite the history, despite the social factors, despite the oppression, the Christian leadership and missionaries there have to bring the focus back to the message and teachings of Jesus. Let Jesus guide the response of the people.

Yes, that is difficult. Yes, that seems “pie in the sky.” But please show me where Jesus said something to the effect of “You don’t really have to do what I say or follow my example. That’s just idealism. Try your best, and if you can’t do it, then go ahead and kill your enemy. Take over with bloodshed. Either way will work out for you.” (Okay. So I ran on a little with that one.)

Am I saying had the violence not existed that young men like Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab would not take up the call for violent, militant, suicidal jihad? Of course not. I am saying it’s very, very hard to kill someone who does nothing but love you, serve you, take care of you when you’re sick, visits you in prison, gives you clothes when you’re cold, shelters your family from the rain, houses your community’s widows and orphans, develop methods and utilization of technologies that help restore the communities, speaks up for you when you are being oppressed and wronged.

The situation is not simple. The answers are not simple. But Christians must be guided by the Lord, not natural impulses or even common sense. Leaders and communities there know far better than I do how that will look and feel and proceed. However, the second violent action is sanctioned, condoned, or even endorsed, our Christ is chucked aside and told to stay inside the church walls while the Christians go do the will of God.

No, I do not believe the violence in Nigeria is actually that widespread and all encompassing. But anywhere that Jesus and violence seem to join hands is a place where the Good News is being suppressed. And that should be troubling for all Christians, everywhere. Christianity is given a bad name here in the US because of the ties it now has to such things as imperialism, occupation, oppression, capitalism, torture, militant anti-abortionism, anti-gay, and capital punishment. So much so that there are Christians who are tending toward not really liking being called Christians. Too many negative connotations involved, and preconceptions in the minds of those who hear you are a Christian. There needs to be a change of that tide here in the US (and there is evidence of that actually happening), and also in places like Nigeria. If the dominant idea of Chrisitans in Nigeria is “they are in a fight with Muslims,” then the name and message of Jesus gets dragged through the mud a little bit.

The message of Jesus in the first century was revolutionary and far from passive (there’s a difference between being a pacifist and being passive, but that’s not the last time I’ll have to mention that); nonviolent to the core, but very active and obviously subversive in the community. The message has not changed now 2,000 years later. So maybe we need to confront the Good News and be told what to do.

    what is happenening in ngeria few days ago came to confirm the sad reality of religious violence in this country. once again in the city of Jos more then 200 people have been killed this time most of them are muslims , the next time they could be christians but in the end its not religion who kills , its poverty and ignorance. Nigeria is a very crowded country with high unemplyment and more than 80% of its population living in poverty. then its also a sad fact that human beings tend to demonize the "other" and justify sometimes discrimination against him and even to kill him, this happened in Rwanda between christians , not because christianity taught this but because the reality on the ground fill the hearts of both sides of hatrd. and the logic of revenge make people blind and bush them to kill innocent people. the only solution to this is to teach people the values of love mercy and justice, but also to work on the ground to improve their lives because poverty is evil. once prophet Mohammed said: if poverty was a man i would kill him . so lets all work to kill poverty.

    Please, listen to Jesus, not Mohammed! Here are Jesus' words about poverty:

    Luke 6:20“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God....27 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic [2] either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

    32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

    The Apostle Paul said this (Romans 6):

    6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

    5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.


    You may think I'm making too much of "killing" the "metaphorical poverty," but ask yourself, if you were that man would you agree to be killed? Of course not! Justice is not what we want, however, so I ask you another question: If the God who created you were that man "Poverty," would you kill him? Unfortunately, yes. The truth is, yes, we all did kill God by our sinful refusal to worship him when he came as Jesus Christ, the man. However, Jesus rose from the dead and forgives us of our sin when we believe in him, giving us eternal life we do not deserve. That's good news! If we are not forgiven, we will be condemned to eternal Hell, but those who are washed in Christ's blood, how can you then say "I agree whole heartedly with your conclusion, especially with killing poverty"? Please, don't make the mistake that we can ever solve poverty this side of heaven, else you'll become just as poor as those you are trying to help, self-righteously seeking to "save" people when you cannot save yourself from your own sin of hatred of the poor. Jesus himself said "7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me." As the "truth" (John 14:6), Jesus knows what he's talking about, and we ought to trust what he's saying instead of seek to prove him wrong by our own efforts at eradicating poverty. I'm not saying you don't help the poor, but don't try to get rid of "poverty" because in the process you'll come to hate everyone who falls under that category, even in trying to "help" them (Proverbs 10:18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
    and whoever utters slander is a fool.").

    The moral is not "social justice," the moral is this:

    Mark 8:34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life [4] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

    It is not death for Christians to die from persecutions by Muslims, but it is hellish death for them if they consider their own lives more valuable than Muslims and seek revenge. Romans 12:19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it [9] to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

    Repent from believing in anything the Prophet Mohammed says and believe in the only True God, Jesus Christ, the one who can save your soul and who loves you more than anyone else, because he died for you on the cross and rose again to everlasting life!

    Very challenging post my friend. Nice way to bring in the New Year. One point of contention though:

    I really do believe that you can be the nonviolent, helping person in your community and people will still want to kill you and not think twice about it. I read about it all the time through VOM.
  • I agree that even being the nonviolent, loving person can end up with you dead. But I believe going the route of nonviolence will give you a better chance than acting in violence which will necessarily breed violence.

    We love Voice of the Martyrs, as unfortunate as it may be for such a mag and organization to even exist. But, that's expected when we are not living like the world.
