Resource Wish: Composter

May 25, 2009 @ EddieView Comments

As we continue towards a more agrarian lifestyle, in keeping with our convictions of building Christian community where we are, we’ve been looking at composting very seriously. Composting allows for reusing resources, healthier food growth, and the opportunity to take care of more folks in our community because of those two points. One relatively inexpensive way to do this, and very effective, is via vermiculture: worm composting.

My wife has done a lot of research (she’s awesome at doing in depth searches and finding exactly what we need). While watching an episode of Gardening by the Yard, we saw the Worm Factory. If you don’t have a lot of space for a large composter outdoors (typically what you get when you’re an urban homesteader, city gardener), a smaller worm composter like this is perfect. You can have it outdoors or indoors when the weather calls for it. And my wife believes this is the one we should get.

Apparently these can expand to seven trays, which makes for a serious amount of compost.

We currently have a fairly impressive garden going, given our lack of outdoor space. Kimbrah will be posting about the garden soon, with some great pictures. We’ve been partaking of the wonderful herbs. But as we try to do more with what we have, we do need some help. The ducks are part of that: eggs will give us a quality amount of protein and baking ingredients. We would love to have some goats, but our current living conditions just don’t allow for it. If we continue towards an intentional living community, we’ll get ourselves some goats when possible. This composter will go a long way.

The 3-tray system is $72. The 5-tray system is $86. Eventually we would order two more trays and have 7. I believe a 1 pound bag of worms (red wigglers, the best for this sort of job) is around $30; I found these folks selling a bag for $25. If anyone in the community would like to help us out, anything would be greatly appreciated and not taken lightly at all. Either prayer or financial help if you feel so led.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers and blessings, folks. Our family has been beyond blessed by you.
